Editorial: SBY's New Ministers Good for Business
October 18, 2011

He may have taken his time, but President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono 's fresh cabinet lineup has all the right ingredients to keep the country's economic growth trajectory on track. With a mix of seasoned politicians and experienced professionals, the new cabinet should help the president end his second term on a positive note.

In particular, two of the recent appointments — Gita Wirjawan as the new trade minister and Dahlan Iskan as the new minister of state-owned enterprises — signal that Yudhoyono's top priority is maintaining a robust economy.

Both cabinet picks are promising for business. Wirjawan, with his investment banking background, was instrumental in boosting foreign direct investment as the chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) , while Dahlan has revitalized state utility company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) while infusing the power sector with a better commercial mind-set. Both men have impeccable records and are highly respected in Indonesia and abroad.

As the new trade minister, Wirjawan's main task will be promoting export growth despite the uncertain global economic landscape. He will need to find new markets for Indonesian products, especially in Africa and South America.

Dahlan, meanwhile, will have to reinvigorate state-owned enterprises by pushing ahead with the government's plan to list better companies on the stock exchange. The SOE sector is not only massive but critical to the country's economic development . Unfortunately, many state-owned businesses are poorly managed, and it will be a formidable task to turn them around.

Now that Yudhoyono has made his decision, he needs to follow through and empower the new ministers to do their jobs well . He must support their ideas, back them up if they run into political headwinds and, most importantly, ensure that they are able to effectively implement their policies.

In the past, the president's cabinet has been criticized for its lack of coordination. Therefore, we hope the new ministers can better coordinate their policies so the business community is not left confused and frustrated by bureaucratic red tape.
