JEDDAH: The Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah refuted on Monday reports in local Saudi newspapers that a large number of Indonesian overstayers were squatting underneath King Fahd (Sitteen) bridge.

"There are no Indonesian nationals staying under the bridge as has been reported recently. From Sept. 21 through to Oct. 24 and with brotherly cooperation from Saudi Immigration Affairs, the Indonesian Consulate in Jeddah has successfully helped speed up the deportation of 3,307 Indonesian overstayers from the Kingdom," said Ahmad Chusny of the consulate's information and cultural affairs department.

He added that on Sunday Indonesian Consul General Zakaria Anshar held talks with Muhammad bin Ahmad Tayyib, director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs branch in Makkah region, in Haj City in Jeddah's old airport.

"The talks focused on the issue of Indonesian overstayers in the Kingdom, especially those who are now being housed in the Haj city, and an agreement was reached on sharing the responsibility to speed up the deportation and repatriation of Indonesian overstayers," said Chusny.

Chusny told Arab News that about 4,740 travel documents have been issued by the consulate's immigration office, and by April this year 2,500 Indonesian overstayers from the Kingdom were successfully repatriated to Indonesia on board a passenger ship from Jeddah Islamic seaport to Padang in Indonesia, and then to Jakarta over a 10-day trip.

Didi Wahyudi, Indonesia's citizen protection consul, told Arab News: "Around 1,500 are housed at the Ain Al-Azizia Haj city. We are expecting more overstayers to arrive, and all will be transported home to Indonesia by Oct. 30 and 31 using 10 Garuda Airlines flights on the Indonesian government's expense."

Early September several Indonesian workers and overstayers gathered outside their consulate. The sudden mass gathering was due to a rumor that Indonesian workers in the Kingdom could be repatriated free of charge and the consulate would bear all expenses
