PARIS. Venezuelan militant Carlos the Jackal is to go on trial here today charged with four deadly bombings carried out almost 30 years ago as extreme left-wing terrorism ravaged Europe.

The 62-year-old, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, is already serving a life sentence in France for the murder of two French policemen and an informant in 1975.

He rose to prominence in 1975 when his commando group took 11 ministers from the powerful OPEC oil cartel hostage in Vienna.

He is now on trial for four attacks in 1982 and 1983 that killed 11 people and wounded more than 100 as part of a private war Carlos waged against France to free two comrades.
