Island in focus: PT PAL Indonesia suffers Rp 1 trillion loss
RUTENG: State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan said he was disappointed by state-owned shipyard company PT PAL Indonesia's bad performance and especially its loss of Rp 1 trillion (US$112 million) this year alone.
"In the future, PT PAL will no longer work on big projects. It will only produce ships for the Indonesian Navy and take care of their maintenance," Dahlan said in Ruteng, capital of Manggarai regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), last week.
He was in the regency to officially launch the Ulumbu geothermal electric power plant (PLTP).
He said he was disappointed that PT PAL won the bid to develop the 5-megawatt PLTP Ulumbu, arguing that he was not sure the company would be able to finish the project on time next year.
"Frankly speaking, this is the company that I hate the most, but it's alright now because I am currently fostering it," he said.
Dahlan also said the ministry planned to build a shipyard in Kupang, provincial capital of NTT, so that ships encountering troubles in the region would not need to be dragged to Surabaya, East Java, or Makassar, South Sulawesi, for repair. "Doing so is more economical," he said.
